Where Can You Go Sandboarding in Morocco?

Sandboard ready for Sandboarding in Merzouga
A sandboard on the sand, ready for the Sandboarding Marrakech trip.

If you are looking for sandboarding near Marrakech, the best experience is in the Sahara Desert, where you can slide down the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga.

Agafay Desert, about one hour from Marrakech, is mainly a rocky desert landscape. It is ideal for sunset views, camel rides, quad biking and desert camp experiences, but it is not the destination to choose for traditional sandboarding on high dunes.

For a genuine sandboarding experience, we recommend combining your activity with a desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. You can explore the High Atlas Mountains, visit traditional kasbahs and spend a night in a Sahara desert camp.

Recommended Tour: 3 Days from Marrakech to Merzouga

Our 3-day desert tour takes you from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains towards Merzouga and the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes.

Along the way, discover Ait Ben Haddou, explore the Dades Valley and enjoy the landscapes of southern Morocco. When you reach Merzouga, you can experience the Sahara dunes and arrange sandboarding, subject to local availability and conditions.
However, for the high dunes of the Sahara, see our 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, with free sandboarding. Also see all our day trips from Marrakech.

Sandboarding in Merzouga: Highlights

  • Slide down the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Moroccan Sahara.
  • Combine sandboarding with a camel ride at sunset.
  • Spend a night in a desert camp under the stars.
  • Travel privately from Marrakech with a flexible itinerary.

What About Agafay Desert?

If you only have half a day in Marrakech, Agafay is still an excellent choice for a desert escape. Enjoy a private transfer, a camel ride or quad biking, mint tea at a desert camp and sunset over the rocky hills.

Please note that traditional sandboarding on large Sahara dunes is not part of the Agafay experience.

Expert tip from our desert guides

Wear long trousers and closed shoes, because sand gets everywhere. In addition, bring sunglasses and a scarf against the wind. Also, avoid the hottest hours in summer, since the sand gets very hot. Finally, for real Sahara dunes, plan a night in Merzouga or Erg Chigaga.

FAQ About Sandboarding in Morocco

The main sandboarding experience is in Morocco’s Sahara dune regions, particularly around Merzouga. Marrakech is a starting point for tours to these destinations rather than a sandboarding location itself.

Agafay is predominantly rocky terrain and is not suitable for the classic high-dune sandboarding experience described on this page.
We recommend a multi-day desert tour to Merzouga, where you can enjoy the dunes, a desert camp and other Sahara activities. Sandboarding should be confirmed with the local operator before booking.
Please ask us to confirm availability and whether equipment and the activity are included in your personalised tour quote.

Yes, for example you can add a camel ride or a quad bike on request.

In general, late afternoon is best, because the sand is cooler and the sunset is beautiful.
