Jbel Saghro Trekking: 7 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Tichka Pass – Skoura

To begin with, your driver picks you up in Marrakech and crosses the High Atlas on the Tichka pass. After lunch in Ouarzazate, you continue to the Skoura oasis. There you also ride a bike through the palm groves to Kasbah Amridil. In the evening, you sleep in a guesthouse in the oasis.

Then you drive through the Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley. There you also meet a local guide for a walk through villages and red hills. After a picnic lunch, you reach the nomad caves, where you spend a simple and unusual night.

In the morning, you walk through the narrow Dades gorges and their rock formations. In fact, this easy day prepares you for the Saghro crossing. After lunch in the mountains, you return to a hotel for a quiet evening.

Later, you enter the volcanic land of Jbel Saghro. With a local guide, you also cross the Tizi n’Tazazert pass, with views of peaks and remote valleys. Finally, you reach Nkob, a village of earth kasbahs, where you sleep in a guesthouse.

After breakfast, you drive through the palm groves of the Draa Valley to M’Hamid. Then you walk in the first dunes, and you can also ride a camel. In the evening, you sleep in a desert camp under the stars.

Then you cross the desert to the high dunes of Erg Chegaga, where you can walk or try sandboarding. After lunch, you also drive across the dry Iriqui lake to Foum Zguid. As a result, you reach Ouarzazate in the evening and sleep in a hotel.

Finally, you visit the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. Afterwards, you drive back over the High Atlas, with stops at the viewpoints. Later, you reach Marrakech in the afternoon.

Expert tip from our guides

Bring walking shoes with good soles, because Saghro and Dades are rocky. In addition, pack a warm layer, since the caves and the desert are cold at night. Also, keep a small bag for the cave night, while your main bag stays in the car. Finally, tell us if you prefer longer walks, so we adapt each day.
