Hassan II Mosque: A Masterpiece of Architecture and Faith

The Hassan II Mosque, built between 1987 and 1993, stands as a stunning architectural marvel on Casablanca’s coast. This sprawling religious and cultural complex spans nine hectares, featuring a prayer hall, ablution areas, baths, a Quranic school (madrasa), a library, and a museum. With a capacity of 25,000 worshippers inside and 80,000 on the esplanade, the mosque can host up to 105,000 people. It also boasts the tallest minaret in the world, soaring 200 meters high. Skilled artisans from across Morocco crafted its intricate 53,000 square meters of woodwork and over 10,000 square meters of zellige tilework.

Quartier Habous: A Historic Blend of Moroccan and European Charm

Quartier Habous, a unique Casablanca neighborhood constructed from 1917 to 1950, blends Moorish and European architectural styles. Known for its vibrant markets, this historic quarter was divided into four sections by the Sultan: one for the Royal Palace, another for palace employees (Derb Sidna), a third for public servants (Derb Al Hajib Thami), and the fourth for administrative buildings. Designed to reflect traditional Moroccan lifestyles, the area includes mosques, hammams, medersas, public ovens, and markets, with houses styled after those in Fez.

Mahkama du Pacha: A Tribute to Moroccan Artistry

The Mahkama du Pacha, built between 1941 and 1952 by French architect Auguste Cadet, is as grand in scale as it is rich in detail. Originally serving as a private residence and a reception hall, this impressive 6,200-square-meter structure includes courtrooms, offices, and galleries around a spacious courtyard and patios. Its medieval-inspired architecture features towers, staircases, and extensive stonework, creating a true homage to Moroccan craftsmanship.

Saqala Fortress: A Historic Defense Against European Invasion

The Saqala fortress, dating back to around 1770, is a historical fortification built to protect Dar el Beida (the original name of Casablanca) from European invasions. This fortress, restored by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Benabdallah, remains intact with its ancient cannons still visible.

Anfa: Casablanca’s Modern Neighborhood with Ancient Roots

The neighborhood of Anfa, now a modern and upscale district, has historical roots as an ancient settlement that dates back to the Paleolithic period. Although the exact origins remain unclear, Anfa is thought to have been inhabited by Berber fishermen and later served as a stopover for Phoenician ships. In medieval times, Anfa was part of the Berber Berghouata kingdom before the Almohades took control in 1188. The area holds historical significance in Moroccan history and is a testament to the many civilizations that once flourished there.
