Why Choose This Fes Medina Guided Tour

This Fes medina guided tour shows you Fes el Bali with a licensed local guide, from the city viewpoints to the oldest lanes. To begin with, you see the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah and the view from the Merinid hills. Then you walk through the Blue Gate to the madrasas, the souks and the Chouara Tannery.

Throughout the day, your guide also adapts the pace to you, so you never get lost in the maze of lanes. In fact, the Medina of Fez has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, and it is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world.

However, if you plan to continue south, see our tours from Fes. Also read our guide to the top things to do in the Fez medina.

Fes Medina Guided Tour: Itinerary

Morning: Royal Palace, Mellah and Viewpoints

To begin with, your guide and driver pick you up at your riad or hotel at about 9:00. Then you see the golden gates of the Royal Palace, Dar al-Makhzen. After that, you walk through the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, with its wooden balconies.

Later, you drive up to the Merinid Tombs or Borj Nord for a view over the whole medina. On request, you can also visit a pottery and zellij cooperative.

Then you enter Fes el Bali through Bab Bou Jeloud, the Blue Gate. Along Talaa Kebira, you also pass food stalls, spice sellers and small workshops. Soon you reach the Bou Inania Madrasa, a fine Marinid school with carved stucco, cedar and zellij.

Meanwhile, it is time for a break. For example, you can taste pastilla or a tagine in a traditional restaurant or an old palace. In general, lunch takes about one hour.

After lunch, you continue to the Nejjarine fountain and the Al-Attarine Madrasa. Then you walk around Al Quaraouiyine, although the inside is reserved for Muslims. Later, you also watch the coppersmiths on Place Seffarine.

Finally, you see the Chouara Tannery from a terrace, before your driver takes you back to your riad at about 17:00.

Expert tip from our local guides

Wear comfortable shoes, because the lanes are steep and uneven. In addition, avoid Friday if you want to see the souks at their busiest, since many shops close at midday. Also, at the tannery, the terraces are inside leather shops, so you never have to buy. Finally, keep small change for tips and the toilets.
