Atlas Mountains Day Trip: Itinerary

Morning: Marrakech – Tahnaout – Asni

To begin with, your driver picks you up at your hotel or riad at about 8:30. Then you drive south across the plain, with the snowy Atlas ahead from December to April. After Tahnaout, the road also climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, where a market takes place on Saturdays.

Soon you reach Imlil, where you meet your local mountain guide. Then you walk on mule paths past walnut and apple trees to Aroumd, a village of stone houses at about 1,900 m. Along the way, you also see wide views of the Toubkal massif.

After the walk, a Berber family welcomes you for mint tea and lunch, for example a tagine and fresh bread. Meanwhile, you learn about life in the mountain villages. In winter, you also warm up by the fire.

Later, you walk or drive back to Imlil. Then you leave the mountains, with photo stops at the viewpoints. As a result, you reach Marrakech at about 17:00.

Expert tip from our mountain guides

Wear walking shoes with a good grip, because the paths are rocky. In addition, bring a warm layer, since Imlil is often 10 °C cooler than Marrakech. Also, in winter the high paths can be icy, so we choose an easier walk. Finally, keep cash for drinks and tips.
