You do not need a multi-day expedition to enjoy the High Atlas. Within easy reach of Marrakech, mountain valleys offer beautiful walks through Berber villages, terraced fields and walnut groves, with snow-capped peaks on the horizon for much of the year. Here are the best day hikes near Marrakech and how to plan them.
1. Imlil and Aroumd
The classic High Atlas walk climbs from the village of Imlil through orchards to Aroumd, a stone-and-earth village perched above the valley with views of the Toubkal massif. It is a moderate hike suitable for most walkers. Read our Imlil day trip guide.
2. Setti Fatma and the Ourika Waterfalls
At the end of the Ourika Valley, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for a walk and scramble to a series of waterfalls. The first falls are close to the village; the higher ones require more effort. See our guide to the Setti Fatma waterfalls hike.
3. Amizmiz and the Western Atlas
Southwest of Marrakech, the area around Amizmiz offers quieter trails between villages, with fewer visitors and wide views over the plain. Learn more about the Berber villages of the High Atlas.
4. Toubkal National Park Valleys
Even without climbing Mount Toubkal, the valleys around Imlil offer many shorter routes. If you want to reach the summit, read our Mount Toubkal climbing guide, as the ascent usually takes two days.
How to Plan a Day Hike from Marrakech
- Start early: it takes time to drive into the mountains, and mornings are cooler.
- Hire a local guide: trails are not always marked, and a guide brings villages and culture to life.
- Check the season: spring and autumn are ideal; winter can bring snow and cold higher up. See the best time to visit the Atlas Mountains.
- Pack properly: see our Morocco trekking packing list.
