Imlil Day Trip from Marrakech: Gateway to Toubkal

Imlil is a mountain village in the High Atlas and the gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Surrounded by walnut trees, terraced fields and earth-built Berber villages, it is one of the most rewarding day trips from Marrakech for travelers who want fresh air, mountain views and a glimpse of rural life.

Where Is Imlil?

Imlil lies south of Marrakech in the heart of the High Atlas, at an altitude of around 1,700 metres. The drive takes you out of the city, across the Haouz plain and up into the mountains via the village of Asni, where the landscape changes quickly from palm trees to rocky slopes and river valleys.

What to Do on an Imlil Day Trip

Walk to the village of Aroumd

One of the most popular walks from Imlil climbs gently through orchards to Aroumd (Armed), a village of stone and earth houses perched above the valley. The views of the surrounding peaks are spectacular, especially when snow covers them in winter.

Visit a Berber home

Sharing mint tea with a local family is a highlight for many visitors. It is a chance to learn about daily life in the mountains, from farming terraces to traditional bread baking. Read more about the region in our guide to the Berber villages of the High Atlas.

Enjoy lunch with a view

Guesthouses and small restaurants in Imlil serve tagines and fresh salads on terraces facing the mountains.

See Mount Toubkal

Imlil is the starting point for climbs of Mount Toubkal. A day trip does not reach the summit, but you can walk part of the trail and admire the scenery. If you want to climb, read our Mount Toubkal climbing guide.

Best Time to Visit Imlil

Spring and autumn are ideal, with green valleys, blossoming or golden trees and comfortable walking temperatures. Summer offers a cool escape from the heat of Marrakech. In winter, snow often covers the peaks and the village can be very cold; bring warm clothes. See also our guide to the best time to visit the Atlas Mountains and Marrakech in winter.

Tips for Your Day Trip

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes: paths are rocky and can be steep.
  • Bring layers. It is noticeably cooler in the mountains than in Marrakech.
  • Carry cash for lunch, tea and small purchases.
  • Respect local customs: dress modestly and ask before photographing people.
