Kasbah Amridil is the most famous kasbah of the Skoura oasis, in southern Morocco. In fact, its tall earth towers rise above the palm grove, about 40 km east of Ouarzazate, with the High Atlas behind. Here is what to know before your visit.
History of Kasbah Amridil
To begin with, the kasbah dates from the 17th century and still belongs to the same family, who keep part of it as a living museum. Then, over time, it became a symbol of southern Morocco, so much that its silhouette appeared on the old 50 dirham banknote. However, the newer 50 dirham notes no longer show it.
What to See Inside
- The courtyards and rooms built in rammed earth and mud brick.
- Traditional tools, kitchens and an old olive press.
- The towers, decorated with geometric patterns.
- The roof terrace, with views over the Skoura palm grove.
Visiting Kasbah Amridil
In general, a visit takes about 45 minutes to one hour, and the entrance fee is paid on site. Also, local guides are available inside. Parts of the kasbah were damaged by the September 2023 earthquake, so some areas may be closed for restoration; check on arrival.
