Rabat in One Day: Itinerary & Highlights

Rabat, Morocco’s capital, is calmer and greener than Casablanca, yet full of history. Its old kasbah, monuments and gardens are compact enough to discover in a single day. This itinerary shows you how to spend one day in Rabat, whether you come from Casablanca or stop on the way to Fes.

Morning: The Kasbah of the Udayas

Start at the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified quarter above the mouth of the Bou Regreg river. Walk through its blue-and-white lanes to the terrace overlooking the Atlantic and the town of Salé, then relax in the peaceful Andalusian Gardens.

Late Morning: The Medina

Rabat’s medina is relaxed and easy to explore. Stroll along Rue des Consuls, once home to foreign diplomats and now lined with carpet and craft shops.

Afternoon: Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V

The Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of a great 12th-century mosque, surrounded by rows of columns. Opposite stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of modern Moroccan craftsmanship, guarded by royal guards in ceremonial dress.

Late Afternoon: Chellah

End the day at Chellah, where Roman ruins and a medieval necropolis lie among gardens, often home to nesting storks.

A UNESCO World Heritage City

Rabat’s historic and modern districts are listed together by UNESCO as Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City.
