At Volubilis, you then walk among columns, a triumphal arch and floor mosaics. Afterwards, you drive on to Fes and reach your riad in the late afternoon. In the evening, you can take a first short walk in the medina.

Along the way, you look into Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859, and watch the Chouara tannery from a terrace. In the afternoon, you also visit a ceramics workshop where artisans cut zellige by hand. Finally, you return to your riad for dinner.
Overnight: Riad in FesDriving: City day on foot
Day 4: Fes to Ifrane, the Cedar Forest and Midelt
After breakfast, you drive into the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland”. Its chalet-style houses and clean parks feel very different from the medina, especially in winter. Then you cross the cedar forest near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques.
In the afternoon, you reach Midelt, a quiet town at the foot of the High Atlas. Here you then spend the night in a guesthouse with mountain views. As a result, the long drive to the Sahara is split into two easy days.
Overnight: Guesthouse in MideltDriving: About 3 hours (200 km)
Day 5: Midelt to Merzouga, Gateway to the Sahara
After breakfast, the road crosses the Tizi n’Talghemt pass and enters the Ziz Gorges. Then you follow the long palm groves of the Ziz Valley past Errachidia and Erfoud. In the late afternoon, you reach the dunes of Merzouga.
Here you share mint tea before a camel ride into Erg Chebbi begins. Later, you enjoy dinner under the stars at your desert camp. Finally, you sleep in a private tent among the dunes.

Overnight: Desert camp in Erg ChebbiDriving: Short local drives
Day 7: Merzouga to the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley
After breakfast, you leave the desert and drive west to the Todra Gorge. Here, rock walls rise up to about 300 metres, while a clear stream runs below. Then you take a short walk through the narrowest part of the canyon.
Then you continue to the Dades Valley for lunch and photos. Along the road, you then see the rounded rocks known as the “Monkey Fingers”. In the evening, you check in to a guesthouse above the valley.

Overnight: Riad in TaroudantDriving: About 4 hours (290 km)
Day 10: Taroudant to Essaouira on the Atlantic Coast
After breakfast, you drive west towards the ocean and then north along the coast. In the afternoon, you reach Essaouira, a fortified port with white houses and blue shutters. Its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
Here you walk along the Skala ramparts while the waves crash below the old cannons. Then you settle into your riad inside the walls. In the evening, the harbour is perfect for fresh grilled fish.
Overnight: Riad in EssaouiraDriving: About 4 hours (260 km)
Day 11: Exploring Essaouira
Today is a slower day by the sea. In the morning, a local guide shows you the medina, the Mellah and the thuya wood workshops. Then you also visit the busy fishing port and its blue boats.
In the afternoon, you can walk on the long beach or watch the kitesurfers. Otherwise, you can shop for jewellery and art in the galleries. Because the trade wind blows often, a light jacket is useful even in summer.
Overnight: Riad in EssaouiraDriving: Walking day
Day 12: Essaouira to Marrakech via the Argan Country
After breakfast, you leave the coast and drive inland through the argan forest. On the way, you stop at a women’s cooperative that makes argan oil by hand. Here you can also taste amlou and buy oil or cosmetics directly from the makers.

In Imlil, you can take an easy walk to nearby villages or simply enjoy lunch with a view. Meanwhile, you see how families still live from farming in the valley. In the late afternoon, you return to Marrakech.
Overnight: Riad in MarrakechDriving: About 3 hours return (130 km)
Day 15: Departure from Marrakech

Overnight: End of the tourDriving: Airport transfer
Expert tip from our driver-guides
Two weeks pass quickly, so plan one slow afternoon in each region. In addition, bring a warm layer for both the Sahara and Essaouira, because nights and sea winds can be cool. Finally, keep small change in dirhams for tips, toilets and mint tea on the road.
