Todra Gorge: What to See & How to Visit

The Todra Gorge is one of the most dramatic natural sights in southern Morocco: towering limestone walls rising on either side of a narrow canyon, with a clear river running at their feet. It lies on the classic route between Marrakech and the Sahara, making it a highlight of many desert tours. This guide covers what to see, what to do and how to include it in your trip.

Where Is the Todra Gorge?

The gorge is located near the town of Tinghir, on the eastern side of the High Atlas. The approach follows a long, green oasis of palm trees and earth-built villages before the valley suddenly narrows into the canyon.

What to See

The narrowest section

The most famous part of the gorge is a short stretch where the cliffs close in, rising high above the road and the river. The walls are often said to reach around 300 metres, and the passage narrows to just a few metres in places. Walking through it on foot is the best way to feel the scale of the rock.

The Tinghir oasis

Before reaching the gorge, take time to enjoy the views over the Tinghir palm grove, with its gardens, kasbahs and villages. Many viewpoints along the road offer beautiful photos.

Local life

The gorge is a living place. Local families, shepherds and small stalls selling carpets and crafts add to the atmosphere.

Things to Do at the Todra Gorge

  • Walk through the canyon: an easy, flat walk along the river.
  • Hike: trails lead up from the gorge to surrounding villages and viewpoints. A local guide is recommended for longer walks.
  • Rock climbing: the cliffs are well known among climbers, with routes for different levels.
  • Visit the palm grove: walk among the gardens and learn how the oasis is irrigated.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go early or late: light is softer and the canyon is quieter.
  • Bring a layer: the gorge can feel cool and shady, even on warm days.
  • Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to hike.
  • Respect local residents and ask before taking photos of people.
