Erg Chigaga and Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) are Morocco’s two great Saharan sand seas, and choosing between them is the first real decision of any desert trip from Marrakech. Both give you camel rides, sunset over the dunes and a night in a desert camp. The difference is in the journey, the atmosphere and how much time you have. This guide compares them honestly so you can pick the one that suits your trip.

The journey: off-road adventure or easier road trip
Both routes start the same way: over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with a stop at the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. After Ouarzazate they split.
For Erg Chigaga, you drive south through the Draa Valley and its palm groves to M’Hamid, where the asphalt ends. The last part is a 4×4 crossing over stony plains, dry lake beds and small dunes. For many travelers this off-road section is the highlight of the trip, and it is also what keeps Erg Chigaga quiet.
For Merzouga, you head east through the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. The road is paved all the way, the scenery changes constantly, and the drive is longer but more comfortable. It suits travelers who prefer smooth roads, or families with young children.
The dunes and the desert experience
Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the postcard Sahara: high orange dunes rising sharply from a flat plain. It is the easier place to see a dramatic dune skyline at sunrise, and it offers the widest choice of activities, from sandboarding to quad and buggy rides.
Erg Chigaga is larger and more spread out. The dunes are generally lower, but the sense of space is bigger: from the top of a dune you often see nothing but sand to the horizon. Camps are fewer and farther apart, so evenings are quieter and the night sky is very dark, which makes it excellent for stargazing.
Desert camps
Both areas have camps ranging from simple Berber tents to comfortable luxury camps with private bathrooms. In Merzouga the choice is wider and camps are closer together. In Erg Chigaga camps are more isolated, which adds to the feeling of being in the deep desert. How many days do you need?
Three days is the minimum for either desert from Marrakech. With three days, Erg Chigaga gives a good balance between driving and desert time, because the route is a little shorter. Merzouga is farther, so three days means long driving days; four days lets you enjoy the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge properly.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Erg Chigaga if you want an adventurous off-road experience, fewer people, a more remote camp and a shorter overall route for three days.
Choose Merzouga if it is your first time in the Sahara, you want the tallest and most photogenic dunes, you prefer paved roads, or you want more activities around the camp.

When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for both deserts, with warm days and cool nights. Winter days are pleasant, but nights in the desert can be very cold, so bring warm layers. Summer is very hot during the day; if you travel then, plan activities for early morning and sunset.
Frequently asked questions
Is Erg Chigaga more authentic than Merzouga?
Both are authentic Saharan landscapes. Erg Chigaga feels more remote because it is harder to reach and has fewer camps, while Merzouga is better known and busier.
Can you reach Erg Chigaga without a 4×4?
The final section after M’Hamid is on desert tracks, so a 4×4 vehicle with an experienced driver is needed.
Which desert is better for families?
Merzouga is usually easier for families thanks to the paved road and the wider choice of camps and activities, but older children often love the adventure of Erg Chigaga.
