Zagora or Merzouga? It is one of the most common questions travelers ask when planning a desert trip from Marrakech. Both offer camel rides, nights in a desert camp and unforgettable skies, but the landscapes, distances and time needed are very different. This guide compares them so you can choose the trip that fits your schedule.
Quick Comparison
- Zagora: closer to Marrakech, possible in 2 days, smaller dunes, ideal when time is short.
- Merzouga: farther away, best in 3 days or more, home to the high golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Zagora: The Short Desert Escape
Zagora lies in the Draa Valley, south of the Atlas Mountains. The drive from Marrakech crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass and passes Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate before following the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s longest palm groves, lined with kasbahs and villages.
The dunes near Zagora are smaller and more scattered than the great sand seas, but you still enjoy a camel ride at sunset, dinner in camp and a night under the stars.
Best for: travelers with only two days, families who prefer less time in the car, and anyone who wants a taste of the desert without a long journey.

Merzouga: The Classic Sahara Experience
Merzouga sits on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of high, golden dunes in southeastern Morocco. This is the Sahara of postcards: dunes rising high above the camp, rippling sand to the horizon and dramatic sunrises.
The journey is longer, so most itineraries take three days and include highlights such as the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge on the way.
Best for: travelers with at least three days who want the most spectacular dunes, and those continuing to Fes.

Driving Time
Both trips involve long driving days, which is why they are usually done with a private driver or guide who stops at viewpoints, kasbahs and villages along the way. Zagora requires noticeably less time on the road than Merzouga, which is why it fits into two days.
What About Erg Chigaga?
A third option is Erg Chigaga, a remote area of large dunes beyond M’Hamid, reached by 4×4 across the desert. It feels wild and isolated and suits travelers looking for adventure. See our 3-day Erg Chigaga tour.
How to Choose
- Only 2 days? Choose Zagora.
- 3 days or more and want the biggest dunes? Choose Merzouga.
- Travelling on to Fes? Merzouga fits perfectly on the way.
- Looking for remote adventure? Consider Erg Chigaga.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 2-day desert trip from Marrakech worth it?
Yes, if time is limited. You will spend a lot of time on the road, but you see the Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley and spend a night in the desert.
Are the dunes in Zagora real Sahara dunes?
Yes, but they are smaller than those at Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga.
Can I do Merzouga in two days from Marrakech?
It is not recommended because of the distance. Three days allows a far more comfortable pace.
