The Tizi n’Tichka pass is the spectacular mountain road that carries travelers from Marrakech over the High Atlas towards Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the Sahara. Almost every desert tour from Marrakech crosses it. This guide explains what to expect, the best stops along the way and tips for a safe, enjoyable drive.
Where Is the Tizi n’Tichka Pass?
The pass lies on the N9 road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, roughly halfway between the two. At around 2,260 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest paved mountain passes in Morocco. The road climbs through forests and Berber villages on the northern side, then descends into a drier, rockier landscape on the southern side, the first glimpse of the pre-Saharan south.
Best Stops on the Road
Atlas villages and viewpoints
As the road climbs, terraced fields, walnut trees and earth-built villages cling to the slopes. Several viewpoints offer panoramic views of the switchbacks below.
Argan oil and roadside cooperatives
Women’s cooperatives along the route explain how argan oil is produced by hand. It is a good place to learn about the process.
The summit
A short stop at the top lets you stretch your legs and enjoy the mountain air. Fossil and mineral sellers are common here; buy only if you are sure of what you are paying for.
Telouet Kasbah (detour)
A side road leads to the Kasbah of Telouet, the former stronghold of the powerful Glaoui family. Its crumbling exterior hides remarkably decorated rooms. The detour adds time, so plan for it in advance.
Ait Ben Haddou
On the southern side, the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Morocco’s most famous sights. Read our complete guide to Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou.
Driving Tips
- Expect many curves. The road is in good condition but winding. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in the front and take regular breaks.
- Allow plenty of time. Trucks, roadworks and photo stops slow progress.
- Winter conditions: snow can occasionally affect the pass in winter. Your driver will check conditions before departure.
- Drive in daylight where possible, and consider a local driver who knows the road well.
Ways to Experience the Pass
The easiest way is on a day trip to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, or as the first stage of a desert tour such as our 2-day Zagora trip or 3-day Merzouga tour. With a private driver, you can stop wherever the views catch your eye.
